Art in Healthcare's Outreach Programme: Art Workshops

Programme Resources >>

At Art in Healthcare our art workshops aim to encourage social interaction, build self-esteem and develop new skills for participants. They are about process, not product, with people coming together for creative group experiences that can have a lasting impact on their health and wellbeing.

The Outreach Programme has grown steadily since 2011 and after a number of trial workshops at a selection of different care environments in Edinburgh we quickly established the potential for their success on a much wider scale. Five years later, we have developed the outreach programme to deliver a large number of art workshops to a broad cross section of care environments in Edinburgh and beyond. The standard format is as follows:

  • We hire professional artists, experienced at working in community settings/care environments, to deliver the workshops
  • The artists take along artworks (or images of these) from our Art Collection to serve as inspiration for participants
  • The workshops are delivered ‘in situ’
  • All materials are provided
  • We also provide a volunteer to support the artist and give extra help to participants
  • Where possible we look to encourage 'celebratory events' at the end of workshops series to showcase artworks created by participants
  • No experience is necessary for participants

We are constantly looking at news ways to engage people across healthcare and related settings in art and, essentially, while we do have a basic structure defined above, all our projects are bespoke and tailored specifically to suit the setting in which they run.

If you would like to discuss receiving an engaging art project from Art in Healthcare in whatever form then please get in touch with Outreach Manager, Amelia Calvert, on 0131 555 7638 or outreachmanager@artinhealthcare.org.uk.
