Echo Basin by Ian McKenzie Smith

Ian McKenzie Smith works within the field of Scottish abstraction, producing images that derive ultimately from the landscape around him. He depicts the essence of his surroundings, moving from recording what he sees to presenting a metaphor of his subject through the use of colour and form.

Echo Basin is a contemplative piece that invites the viewer to appreciate the simple colour statement while simultaneously finding joy in deconstructing the complex layering process involved in the making of the work

This is an original screenprint created by the artist to raise funds for Art in Healthcare, offered in an edition of 75 impressions. Each edition is signed and numbered by the artist and is printed by hand from 9 screens

Awarded the OBE for his services to Art In 1992, he was President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour 1988 to 1998; Secretary of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1991 to 1998; President of the RSA from 1998 to 2007 and a Trustee of the National Galleries of Scotland from 1999 to 2007.

Flowers for Frida by John C. Brown

Inspired by a recent trip to Mexico, Flowers for Frida exemplifies Brown’s distinctive, colourful and expressive style. Warm hues of red, orange and pink, reflective of the Mexican landscape and culture intermingle and balance with darker tones, while a sketch of Frida Kahlo sits to the right of a vase overflowing with flowers. This artwork has been printed by hand at Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop from 15 screens.

Insignia for the Little White Horse by Alan Davie

Limited edition of 100 prints signed by the artist. Art in Healthcare has only 7 prints left.

Edinburgh Unversity has very generously donated to Art in Healthcare 30 signed, limited edition prints of 'Insignia for the Little White Horse' by our patron, Alan Davie. Alan Davie worked with the artist/printmaker Dan Bugg on these prints, which have been created from an image of Davie's original painting in a similar way to a lithographic reproduction.

Born in Grangemouth in 1920, Alan Davie studied at Edinburgh College of Art where he won several scholarships. After a period spent serving in the army he worked as a jazz musician, while developing his interests in writing poetry, designing and making textiles, ceramics and jewellery.

His influences have always been diverse and by the time of his first solo exhibition held in Edinburgh, 1946, his interest in the works of Paul Klee and primitive artists was apparent. By 1947 his work was considered groundbreaking, with successful exhibitions held in Florence and Venice. During this period the collector Peggy Guggenheim became a major supporter and during the next ten years he exhibited widely. His first New York exhibition was held in 1956 and from this time he was warmly accepted and welcomed by the likes of Jackson Pollock and Gorky. In 1972 he was awarded a CBE.
