My work is abstract but my source material is often derived from my immediate surroundings - simply walking around this beautiful city has given me countless creative ideas. I'm fascinated as well by the visual impact of the elements on the environment - the weathering's, surfaces and atmospheres are all part of my subject matter. I've also spent many hours drawing and observing plant forms at the Botanic Garden in Edinburgh and my interpretation of those images will frequently find their way into the paintings. I admire the spontaneity and unselfconscious creativity of young children's drawings. I work intuitively and instinctively, often applying layers of paint and drawing until I'm satisfied with the depth and atmosphere of the artwork.
