The symbols of this print are reminiscent of those used in alchemy, an early attempt to establish the essence of human life: the 'Vital Spark'.

Alastair Mack was born in Edinburgh in 1955. After working as a lab technician for twelve years, he enrolled as a mature student at Edinburgh College of Art. He graduated in 1987 and spent the following year doing postgraduate study, and travelling across Europe, including Spain, Holland, Belgium and Denmark.

He continues to work part-time as a senior laboratory technician with Edinburgh Council, and this work is is reflected in his art, which often includes scientific references and images drawn from scientific observations. Recently he has experimented with digital images as a medium where where science and art meet. He is a member of Society of Scottish Artists, and since 1988 he has been a member of the Edinburgh Printmakers’ Workshop. Since 1993 he has been lecturer in Fine Art Printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Arts, Dundee.
