There is a gentle movement in this painting and a sense of something about to happen. Light is fading, the sunset is near and the owl is patiently waiting for the incoming hunt. There is no human presence here, just nature - nature and the eternal fight between predator and prey.

Mary Paton (1920-1990) was born in Ayrshire. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Gillies, McTaggart and Rosoman. The artist spent most of her later life living near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire and the landscape in this area inspired many of her paintings, including gardens and floral and bird studies.
