Born in Calcutta in 1966, Basak graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta in 1991 with a First Class B.V.A in Indian Painting. Following this, he gained a First Class MA in Graphic Art from M.S. University of Baroda in 1993. From 1996 to 1997 he was a visiting lecturer at the Ecole Regionale des Beaux Arts, Caen and from 1997 to 1998, he lectured at the Government College of Arts & Craft. He has been exhibited in collections in India, Europe and China. Unlike those of his contemporaries who prioritise technique over subject matter, Atin's dreamlike images of iconic figures are more concerned with a complex and carefully rendered symbolism than acidic accidents of texture.
