Jia Lee graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2016 and won the Art in Healthcare purchase award, with funding from the Turtleton Trust.
Jia Lee's Blue Room II is a combination of Far Eastern manga style bold black lines with the Western tradition of painting, echoing Matisse's Red Studio - where black lines are used as a negative on blue surface to indicate pieces of furniture and perhaps evoke memories of homely comfort.
'Blue Room II is about the feeling and the emotions that I tried to capture as a foreigner living in the UK. The room is a depiction of my home in Seoul, South Korea. The tender blue can be nostalgic and vivid at the same time representing my moods and nostalgia. I explore the relationship of my roots and traditions with the new environment that I have to adapt in through combining Asian art movement and western artist influence such as Matisse and Hockney' - Jia Lee.
