George studied at Glasgow School of Art 1955-1960 where he won the premier awards and top national scholarships from the Royal Scottish Academy. He then studied extensively in Europe. George lived and worked in West Africa after crossing the Sahara. On returning, he taught composition in the Painting School of Glasgow School of Art from 1962. In 1964 he was elected to the RSW. He was awarded a major Arts Council award in 1968 and then went on to set up his own painting school in 1969, which he later transferred to France.

In 1972 he presented a series on Art for Scottish Television and in 1973 designed the set and costumes for the ballet, "Embers". He was elected Chairman of the Glasgow League of Artists in 1977. In 1991 has was elected to the RGI and was also artist in residence at Dinan, France that same year. George was elected President of Glasgow Art Club in 1997, FRSA in 1999, ROI in 2004 and RBA in the same year. In 2007 he was elected to the ARWS. He was the Artist in Residence, Collioure in 2008 and Isle of Lewis 2009. Five of his works were used by La Poste to promote Val d'Oise (France ) in 2007.
