Born in Edinburgh in 1969, Learmont studied for a BA (hons) in Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art between 1987 and 1992. Following this she completed a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy before studying in Paris. Having won the Christie's Award for Painting in 1990, she exhibited widely across Europe.
Many of her works are about watching the world. "In the same way that someone would re-tell a story, my imagination would sometimes take over and the cumulative effects of thoughts and memories would make careful perspective seem unnecessary."
Since suffering from illness, her art has changed from large scale oils to illustration although these are sometimes still presented on a large scale.
