John Houston (1930-2008) was born in Buckhaven, Fife and trained at Edinburgh College of Art, where he subsequently taught as Deputy Head of the School of Drawing & Painting. John is renowned for his intense atmospheric landscapes, in particular, his passion for land and sea. Towards the Bass Rock is one of 12 works by Houston that has been in part of the collection since 1993.
