Room for Art Exhibition 2023

The Distance Travelled

An exhibition of artworks made by artists who are supported the Room for Art workshops for health and wellbeing.

Room for Art was established by Art in Healthcare in 2016 to provide a programme of visual art workshops within community spaces across Edinburgh. The programme works on a social prescribing model where individuals are invited to join our creative groups by referral. We currently have five Room for Art workshops running weekly throughout the year. Each of these ‘pop up’ art studios is led by an experienced professional artist. The groups are relaxed, safe, social spaces where we nurture creativity and encourage experimentation, play and exploration with different art materials, processes and techniques. Art engagement can provide many benefits to health and wellbeing, which could include greater social connections, increased confidence, self-esteem and improved mental wellbeing.

This exhibition of artworks was inspired by a Room for Art group trip to see the Grayson Perry exhibition ‘Smash Hits’ at the National Galleries in Edinburgh in October 2023.

The artworks tell personal stories depicting journeys in art and life. Artworks are presented in mixed mediums including; drawing, painting, ceramics, sewn, stitched, woven and knitted textiles, digital printing, jewellery, marbling, paper-maché, collage, photography and relief modelling.
